Kunming is the capital city of Yunnan province. It has a long history and was the ancient gateway of the famed Silk Road. Today Kunming is the heartbeat of Yunnan province, enjoying a reputation as one of China's most picturesque cites. Kunming combines an ancient and proud tradition with the dynamism of being a modern metropolis. It is located at the northern edge of the large Lake Dian, surrounded by temples and lake-and-limestone hill landscapes.

Kunming is the focal point of Yunnan minority culture. Some 26 ethnic minorities such as Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai, Hani and more inhabit the region. Each group has its own featured festivals such as the Torch festival of Yi people, the Golden Temple Fair and so on. Visit these festivals if you can.

The variety of Kunming cuisine never fails to satisfy hungry travelers. Kunming really represents a culinary crossroads featuring dishes from all over Yunnan and southern China. With the high humidity and mild temperatures, there is an abundance of fruits and vegetables all year round easily available throughout the city and often used as the staple for local delicacies.
